Women in Wine is a pioneering South African wine brand established in 2006. It’s the first wine-producing company in the country that is fully owned, controlled, and managed by women, initially forged by a group of twenty black women wine professionals aiming to give women, especially farm workers and their families, a meaningful stake in the wine industry.
We focus on ethical, environmental, and socioeconomic practices, as well as black economic empowerment and skills development.
Our range includes six varietals: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, a Cabernet/Shiraz blend, Pinotage Rosé, and Chardonnay–Chenin Blanc. These wines are sold locally, including at Shoprite and Shoprite Liquor Shops nationwide, and are also exported to the US, China, Ireland, Spain, Sweden, and Denmark.
A key initiative of the brand is the Farm Worker Women’s Trust, supporting about 200 female vineyard workers through training, mentorship, and career development. One notable beneficiary, Ursula Vriesenhof, advanced from grape picker to vineyard supervisor. This emphasis on empowerment earned them a nomination for the UK’s Drinks Ethical Business Award.
