Plaisir de Merle is a historic Cape Dutch wine estate founded in 1693 by French Huguenot Charles Marais. It blends centuries-old heritage with striking modern architecture, including a cellar opened in 1993, nestled beneath a moat and crowned with a sculpted heraldic frieze. The estate spans nearly 1,000 hectares with about 375 hectares under vine, though only around 80 hectares are dedicated to the Plaisir range.
Modern winemaker Tim Whitfield heads the vineyards, following in the footsteps of Niel Bester and architects remodelling by Rose Jordaan. The elegant tasting centre, once a barn built in 1823 and now refreshed with antique furnishings, oriental carpets and leather seating, offers tastings of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and the flagship Grand Plaisir. Tastings can include pairings like artisanal fudge, nougat, cheese, and charcuterie, or craft gin and beer by the glass.
The estate also offers accommodation in beautifully styled self-catering suites (Merle Manor House, Lady Grey Suite, Forest Cottage, etc.), all with infinity pool access, scenic trails, and complimentary tasting room visits.
