AA Badenhorst Family Wines is a pioneering small winery nestled on the Kalmoesfontein farm in the Swartland region of South Africa’s Paardeberg mountains. Handled by cousins Hein and Adi Badenhorst, who took over the previously neglected property in 2007/2008, the estate spans around 60?hectares, with 28?ha of old bush vines planted during the 1950s and 1960s on granite soils. Their approach is firmly rooted in traditional, minimal-intervention methods: biologically farmed, dry-farmed bush vines, native yeast fermentation in old oak, concrete, and open wooden vats, often including long macerations up to four months.
The core AA Badenhorst family range features a white blend dominated by Chenin Blanc with supporting Rhône and lesser-known varietals, and a Southern Rhône-style red blend (Shiraz, Mourvèdre, Grenache, Cinsault) showcasing Swartland’s terroir. A second-tier “Secateurs” label offers approachable white, rosé, and red blends. They also produce unique projects like Caperitif (a solera-style vermouth revival), Riviera (white skin-macerated wine), and premium single-vineyard bottlings—Ringmuur Cinsault from a 1963 vineyard being one standout.
Recognised as one of the leaders of the Swartland Revolution, Adi Badenhorst brings pedigree and creativity, having trained at Rustenberg, in France, and elsewhere, producing wines with energy, authenticity, and terroir-driven character. Their flagship wines receive acclaim for their complexity, minerality, and natural expression, perfect for enthusiasts seeking genuine expressions of South African old-vine character.
Visits—including tastings, tours, and pizza evenings—are by appointment, with space available in vineyard cottage-style accommodation and event hosting at the impressive cellar and farm homestead. Whether you’re delving into their signature family blends or their more experimental releases, AA Badenhorst offers an unfiltered encounter with Swartland winemaking.
