SUMMARY:Barrels & Beards Harvest Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Run with the bull at this year’s Barrels & Beards Harvest Celebration on Saturday\, April 21\, when this most majestic beast takes center stage our annual Botrivier “Baard Paartie”. \nThe bull referred to here\, of course\, is the bull in the Bot River Wine Route logo: the link to Bot River’s very foundation. Amongst the Khoisan people\, the valley was once called Gouga – the place of cattle; the Dutch made the connection to butter\, which led to its modern name. In this sense\, the bull represents fertility\, virility\, leadership\, and strength. More importantly\, it connects the history of all inhabitants of the region for over a 1 000 years; a symbol of the meeting of diverse cultures; and\, the sense of place offered in every glass of Bot River wine. \nThe venue for this year’s event is Wildekrans Wine Estate\, home of excellent wine and hospitality. The occasion centers around the auction: the sale of exceptional Bot River wines. The auction benefits various school-level educational projects in the region. \nThis year guests will be able to feast on the food of the valley with tables brimming with local produce and specialties. \nAs for the beards\, the tale of how infuriating stubble became tradition begins like most – by chance. The grape harvest waits for no-one – when the fruit is ripe\, it must be picked and taken to the cellar. There’s little time for sleep\, but it’s a festive time nonetheless as Mother Nature reveals the proof of the preceding season’s work. Time-consuming activities like shaving must take a backseat too\, so beards in the vineyards and cellar are not unusual at this time of year. \nSome eight years ago\, Luddite winemaker Niels Verburg declared a challenge to his colleagues in what might also be known as The Great Bot River Beard-off. The challenge has stuck and becomes a tradition. Now\, the winemakers deliberately undertake a self-imposed shaving ban during harvest in preparation for the annual Beard Parade – a contest of great inconsequence and almighty mirth. Some (gasp!) may even cultivate a particular style for this climax of Barrels & Beards. \n“We look forward to the Cut the Bull-theme for Barrel & Beards this year\, an event to let your hair down and meet the winemakers of Bot River in one festive location\,” says Bot River Wine Route co-ordinator Melissa Nelsen\, the bubbly personality behind Genevieve MCC. \nBot River lies a mere one hour’s drive up the N2 highway from Cape Town. A perfect country getaway\, the region has long been known for its wine pioneers and Mavericks. There are 13 wine farms\, most of them family-owned and run\, producing world-class wines. Often underestimated\, Bot River is also renowned for its conservation initiatives.

DESCRIPTION:Fun Mountain Bike team relay in mid-June relay adds a trail run option near Stellenbosch \nThe Nine-to-Five Team Relay event will take place from Dirtopia’s home base at Delvera farm on Sunday 17 June 2018.  The event was first held in 2006 and is based on the 24hour concept which creates a fun atmosphere at the start/finish. Mountain bikers can ride a 10km lap for the full 8 hours (or not) to see how many laps they can do in the day\, as part of a team or as a solo rider. \nEntry Fee\nA very affordable entry fee of only R150 per person makes this the perfect event to do some training while socializing with friends and family at this beautiful Winelands venue. This year\, a separate 5km route will be marked for trail runners that would also like to run between vineyards and on the singletrack trails. \nCategories & Prizes\n\nVarious categories for teams of four and teams of two with prizes to the top three in each category including the solo male & female riders & runners.\nIt is not necessary for team members to ride in sequence and one team member can do as many consecutive laps as they like.\nThere should however NOT be more than a four-lap difference between the rider with the most laps and the rider with the least number of laps at the end of the event.\n\nAbout the Route\nThe route is easy enough for riders across all levels and fast laps will ensure lots of activity in the transition area. There is a lot of entertainment on the farm for kids like go-karts\, games & soft play toys to name a few. Dirtopia Café will be open for breakfast\, lunch\, tapas\, coffee\, and even cold beers.  Dirtopia bike shop & Trail Centre has spares\, clothing\, and energy snacks & drinks. \nAt the start/finish will be Powerade for the riders. DESCRIPTION:STAALWATER MOUNTAIN BIKE EVENT OFFERS FOUR DISTANCES TO RIDERS ON ONE DAY \nThe ninth edition of the Staalwater MTB Challenge will take place from The Caledon Casino\, Hotel\, Spa and Entertainment on the 19th of August 2018. The event returns to the one day only option with four mountain bike distances: 15km\, 40km\, 60km and a new 75km route option.
