Nestled in the Helderberg foothills just outside Somerset West, Morgenster spans roughly 74 hectares of vineyard and olive groves. Established officially in its current form in 1992 by Italian-born Giulio?Bertrand, the estate blends South Africa’s sunshine and soils with European expertise.
Under his vision and guidance from Bordeaux’s Pierre Lurton, Morgenster planted traditional Bordeaux varieties—Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot—and later introduced Italian grapes like Sangiovese and Nebbiolo in its Italian Collection.
Today, winemaker Henry Kotze (mentored by Chris Keet) spearheads a philosophy of authenticity, crafting complex, award-winning Bordeaux-style reds with strong aging potential—all grown with respect for terroir and precision viticulture. Complementing these wines are top-tier extra virgin olive oils, pressed from over 40 hectares of olive orchards.
Acknowledged globally—Morgenster’s oils ranked among the world’s best and even earned “Mill of the Year” in 2007—the oils offer vibrant flavours of mint, sage, and citrus, a testament to their cold-pressed, natural production. Their contemporary tasting room, perched beside a dam, showcases this dual legacy.
Visitors sample both wines and olive oils—a harmonious pairing that celebrates the estate’s identity and artisanal heritage
