Skilpadvlei—Afrikaans for “tortoise marsh”—has been under the stewardship of the Joubert family since 1917, with fourth-generation Willie Joubert today guiding its legacy on a fully operational 78?ha farm, of which roughly 55?ha is under vine, alongside olive groves and tomato plots. Nestled on the Polkadraai Road near Stellenbosch, the estate enjoys a cooling winelands climate with afternoon Atlantic breezes that enhance freshness and bring balance to its grapes.
The vineyards grow on varied soils typical of Stellenbosch, benefiting from maritime influence and elevation. These conditions foster aromatic whites—such as Sauvignon Blanc—and structured reds including Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, and the estate’s signature ML Joubert Bordeaux-style blend.
Skilpadvlei wines are crafted to reflect both regional typicity and vineyard-driven nuance. Their balanced and elegant wines—ranging from crisp whites to robust reds—showcase the estate’s hands-on, terroir-first philosophy.
