Nestled on the southwestern slopes of the Helderberg between Somerset West and Stellenbosch, Avontuur is a historic family-run estate and stud farm managed today by Michael and Philip Taberer.
With over 16 hectares of prime vineyard planted in steep, weathered slopes, the estate benefits from a mosaic of granite, shale, and sandstone soils, cooled by False Bay breezes—yielding wines with authentic elegance, freshness, and mineral depth.
Avontuur cultivates a rich spectrum of grape varieties: Chardonnay (its sole white), Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and a sturdy red lineup of Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Pinotage. The estate follows a boutique-focused ethos—only releasing premiere wines in exceptional vintages, ensuring each bottle meets their rigorous standards.
Winemaking combines traditional gravity-flow and meticulous sorting with modern cellar techniques. They vinify their estate-grown fruit with minimal intervention to preserve terroir purity and depth.
